See you on Saturday!

Wondering where 45 Anzac Road is? Look for the Oxford Hotel on the corner of Anzac and Oxford St, and 45 is just a few houses up from the hotel, on the same side. If you're driving, note that it's Residents Only parking on that side of the street - parking is fine on the other side.

So see you there on Saturday afternoon!

Two days to go and thank you to our supporters

Only two days to go before our Community Day - Dolls for Zulu children - on Saturday 1st July from 2-5pm at 45 Anzac Road Leederville.

Hope to see you there, and please tell your friends. Whether you think you might like to make dolls, or you'd simply like to take a look and have afternoon tea, or support our Bring and Buy fundraiser, we'd love to see you.

We've had some more generous donations of 'gorgeous goodies' for our Bring and Buy sale from local businesses in Mount Hawthorn:

Uthando Project website

Just got the Uthando Project website details . . . there's a lovely photo of a child with a knitted doll . . .

More dolls!

Here are my two original dolls with three visitors . . . these are all cloth or felt, but I'll get some knitted doll photos next time.

To find out more about our Community Day - Dolls for Zulu Children, just scroll down . . .

Doll making, thinking, talking

Today I went to Georgia Efford's lovely house in the hills, to help make dolls . . . it's years since I did more than sew a button on, but I had enormous fun tacking bias binding around a tiny vest, stuffing a felt doll (it's definitely an art!) and having some great conversation. It was a good reminder that you don't have to be a sewing or knitting expert to be part of a group.

The Community Day on July 1st will have doll makers in action - join in and thread some beads or finish off some clothes - or put your name down to meet up later in the month. Every doll will go to a child in Kwa Zulu Natal - and will bring delight.

If you seriously aren't into sewing or knitting, simply come and marvel (that'll be me), and be part of our Bring and Buy Sale.

Keep July 1 free!

Just a reminder that our Community Day will be on July 1st, from 2-5pm, at 45 Anzac Road, Leederville - scroll down for more details!

Doll patterns

Wondering how to go about making a doll?

Calico and Ivy have downloadable patterns for a simple and super-simple knitted doll

Or read about Eoin Cameron's doll and email the ABC for the simple felt doll pattern - this is the one used in the picture a couple of posts ago . . .

Bring and Buy - what to bring?

The idea of our Bring and Buy Sale is that you bring along something gorgeous that you don't want, to put on the sale table - and then you take the chance to buy some other gorgeous things that have been donated. Clear out your cupboards, help us raise funds - and get some great bargains, buying things you DO want.

We've asked for new or 'as new' items . . . like presents that you've never used, things you've bought, then had second thoughts about when you got home . . . maybe:
When you arrive, you'll see there are tables with different prices on them ($1, $2, $5, $10). Do you think those stripey socks you brought along would sell for $2? Put them on the $2 table.

Or maybe that handbag (never used, much too small!) cost you $50 - but you'll put it on the $10 table and let someone get a bargain. (And of course the funds raised all go straight to the project - sent via Rotary.)

The sale is only one feature of our Community Day on July 1st to support the Uthando Project: Dolls for Zulu Children. Please scroll down to read more!

Dolls!

Here's are a couple of the dolls that have been made . . . it's going to be hard to say goodbye to these two.

These two dolls have been made from the same simple pattern using brown felt - but they're so individual.

Uthando Project and Ask5

Our first Ask5 Community Day will be held in Leederville on July 1 - it's called Ask5 simply because we're inviting friends to pass the word on to another 5 people. And it's all about supporting the Uthando Project (Dolls for Zulu children), which you can read about in this Stateline transcript!

What will be happening on the day? First of all, the chance to see some of the wonderful handmade dolls that people around Perth have created. Then, if you sew or knit, there's the opportunity to see some of these people at work, join in, talk to them about the dolls, pick up patterns, or form a group.

For those who'd like to support, but aren't 'crafty', please bring along a 'gorgeous goodie' for our Bring and Buy Sale (something gorgeous, new/unused, that you don't want but that somebody else would love). We already have some terrific 'goodies' donated. When you arrive, look for the appropriate table ($1, $2, $5 or $10) and pop your 'goodie' on it - then start shopping! You can also sponsor a doll with a message of friendship, or join us for afternoon tea (gold coin donation).

All the funds raised (yes, that's 100%) will be sent (via Rotary Australia World Community Service) to CINDI - a South Africa network of organisations working together in the interests of children affected by HIV/AIDS - for doll distribution and training for carers.

I'll try to post some photos next time, once I work out how . . .

Oh, and the details:
Saturday July 1, from 2-5pm, at 45 Anzac Road, Leederville. Please write it in your diaries (and tell 5 people who might like to know!)
